HI.
I am a cinematography student. Iw as looking for a bagpack propper for cinematographers and I ran i to your blog. I was wondering, where would the compass be needed? (Im reading this post backwards, so I may ask future questions about the use of the accesories!)

I use a SUUNTO MC-2G Global Navigator Compass/Clinometer and my iPhone. For starting out a basic compass is probably fine, even the one in a phone. For more advanced work a clinometer is helpful. SUUNTO makes a number of nice compasses.
